Brigit: Hello and welcome back to the Biddy Tarot Podcast!

Last episode – number 19 – I talked about the bad boys of Tarot, and what to do when they show up in a reading.

Today I’m going to be talking about the good guys of Tarot.

Those gorgeous, beautiful cards in the Tarot deck that can only warm your heart, make you feel amazing, and really look forward to what’s on the horizon for you. But these cards aren’t all rainbows and unicorns. In fact, the good guys have a dark side, too, and that’s what we’re going to cover in today’s podcast.

Today I’m going to be talking about the good guys of Tarot.

Those gorgeous, beautiful cards in the Tarot deck that can only warm your heart, make you feel amazing, and really look forward to what’s on the horizon for you. But these cards aren’t all rainbows and unicorns. In fact, the good guys have a dark side, too, and that’s what we’re going to cover in today’s podcast.

So, who are the good guys of Tarot?

Well, basically, any card that really gives you that warm, positive feeling. The cards that we really look out for when we’re doing a Tarot reading and we want really good news, right? I’ve chosen five from the Tarot deck and, of course, there are probably many more than just these five and you might have your own personal favorites. But for today, I wanted to focus on these particular five cards.

So, I’ve chosen:

• The Sun
• The Star
• The Lovers
• Nine of Cups
• Ten of Cups

And I’ve chosen them because they’re, usually, you know, cards that you really would like to see in a reading. And also, often times the imagery is just really, really gorgeous and, again, you just can’t help but feel that warm and fuzzy feeling inside of you.

But what I do want to do is also show you that these light, positive cards do have a dark side. Just as we’ve learnt with our bad boys of tarot – that the dark cards have light sides as well.

The Sun

All right, let’s get started! I’m going to start with the Sun card. Well, even just the name – “Sun” – every time we think about the sun we might think: the beach, you might think of summertime, the warmth of the sun on your skin. Just having that experience with the sun energy can just… it just feels so good.

When we look at the imagery of the sun card and, you know, I’m looking here at the Radiant Rider-Waite deck, the imagery is just beautiful and inviting and warm and, oh, it’s so lovely. So we see this huge, big sun in the sky radiating with its sun rays. There are some sunflowers growing over the top of the wall. And in the foreground is a white horse and a little, I don’t know, baby boy maybe?

A young toddler, let’s say, naked in that sort of wonderful, innocent nakedness that kids have, you know? They can run around naked and not be worried at all about body image or things like that. It’s absolute freedom. And they’re wearing a red feather and a flower crown, or something like that.

So, the Sun in its most positive form represents that warmth and radiant energy, positivity, freedom, innocence and, you know, if you think about where the sun card comes in the spectrum of The Major Arcana cards, it’s right near the end, which is an indication of its spiritual maturity.

Because I think we could often look at that child and think: “Oh, you know, it’s a young child, what do they know about life?” But I think our children are actually our biggest teachers. Because they’re coming into this world without any sort of preconceptions. They haven’t, sort of, been tainted by humanness yet. And it’s bringing us back to the core essence of who we really are, and experiencing freedom when we are who we really are.

You know, when you’re in that place of full self-acceptance, feeling self-love and really good about yourself, doesn’t it feel free and magic and amazing? It’s also a sign of our spiritual evolution, again, given the positioning of this card. And it’s a sign that when we’re in that place of freedom and authenticity, we’re actually highly evolved in our spiritual path.

So that’s the positive side, now you might be thinking, “Oh, well, how on Earth could there be a dark side to the sun?” Well, as with all of these good cards, I often think about: “What does too much of this good energy look like? What would happen if this energy started to get a bit out of balance?”

So, with the sun card, it can look a little bit dark in a number of ways. If we have too much sun, we start to get sunburned and, even worse, it can have quite a damaging effect on us in the long-term. So too much of a good thing can actually damage us, that’s one thing to remember.

The sun in its aspect of freedom, innocence, and confidence, we can actually get into a place where we become overconfident. Where our life is purely about what pleasures us and what makes everything so fun that we forget that sometimes there is a bit of hard work that goes along with our lives.

And so I often think of, you know, there’s quite a big conversation now around following your passion, living your dream, and all of that, which I think is incredibly important. But I see a lot of tension when people think: “Well I have to love what I do, and if I can’t find that then I have to keep searching for it.” And yet, there’s no sense of, you know, sometimes you just have to work hard on things that don’t bring you pleasure so that you can finally get to that place where it does bring you pleasure.

You know, I think of my path with Biddy Tarot, and I’ve had to put in a lot of hard yards, and, sure, it blows my mind, you know, about what I get to do in this work, but I still had to do things that were hard work. And so I sort of see that with the sun. That having playtime is great, but you can’t have playtime all the time, particularly as an adult. I don’t know how kids get away with it. They’ve got us as their slaves maybe.

The Star

Alright, so, that’s the sun card, let’s now step into the Star card. Now, the star, well, if you think about stars just in general, it’s kind of like that universal thing. The stars are up in the sky, you know, “Wish Upon a Star,” “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” there’s such a beautiful sort of fantasy around stars.

And stars seem to hold, like, this hope, and faith, and connection to the universe and that, which is bigger than all of us. And we see that, also, in the Star card in the Tarot deck.

So, in the Rider-Waite, I can see this woman, she’s naked. And, you know, you start to see quite a theme around nakedness in the Tarot and it’s often a sign of really being stripped bare and exposing oneself. Not in a Nudie Rudie way, but more in that sense of, “Here I am, this is who I am. This is me in my full authenticity, this is my truth,” and so on.

So, with the star card, there’s the lady here, she’s got one foot in the lake, and one foot on the earth. Which shows quite a balanced, grounded perspective of grounding with the earth, but also connecting with the fluidity of the water, and the emotions and so on.

And she holds two pots, and she’s pouring water out of those pots. And if you think about water, it’s so restorative and regenerative, you just take a shower and you feel so cleansed afterwards. Or a swim in the ocean. So there’s something really cleansing about this card. And, of course, in the sky, there’s a big, ginormous star with another seven stars, as well, connecting us back into the universe.

So the positive side of the star is acknowledgment that we are part of something bigger, and when we connect to that something bigger, we become more of our true, authentic selves. It’s also that sense of hope and faith that he universe has got your back, that you are meant to be here just as you are, nothing more, nothing less. It’s really quite a powerful card from that sense.

But what happens when we get into the darker side of the star?

Well, again, I’m looking at this more from, “What does too much star energy begin to look like?” And, you can find, there’s sometimes you hear people completely handing over their power to the universe, or to fate, or to destiny, or so on. “It's in God's hand's now.” And whilst I respect that, and I understand the thoughts behind it, there is a point at which I think that become a little bit too far. And that point is where you’re no longer taking responsibility for your life, and you’re just letting this bigger force take care of it.

I think, in my opinion, we’ve got a duality of responsibility. We’re here as human beings with a level of consciousness so that we can make decisions about our life. And yes, we are guided by the universe, and yes, we need to connect in with the universe, but I just don’t think it’s up to us to say, “Over to you. Over to you to do universe, you can take care of things from here.”

So I think, sometimes, the darker side of the star can be that almost blind faith in something. There’s a little bit of a boundary, it’s a little bit of a gray area, but when you’ve gone too far, you can usually sense it and feel it. You might think of people you know who might have entered this place. So the star, in its darker side, is a little more around blind faith and hope.

The Lovers

Okay, let’s move now to the Lovers card. Now, of course, if you were doing a reading on love and relationships, you would just be jumping up and down if you saw the Lovers card. The name of it alone is just, it’s like, “Ooh, Lovers, yes, wonderful.” But, also, the imagery. Look at the Radiant Rider-Waite deck, the card for the Lovers, and the colors are so exuberant and strong and energizing.

And we see this big sun, and in front of the sun is a big winged angel almost in a meditative state – eyes closed, arms, palms out, almost as if it’s praying over the scene before the angel. And in front we see a man and a woman, both naked, again. Again, that’s a sign of purity and being true and authentic. But, behind the woman is a tree with a snake in it, an apple tree, and this does kind of remind me of the Garden of Eden. Not a new observation, most people see that also when they see this Tarot card.

It can be this sign of temptation. So, do you listen to God, or, at least, unto your higher self and take the higher path? Or do you succumb to your temptation? This man and woman, they’re standing in front of each other, naked. Maybe they had some inclinations to connect intimately. But, would that be in their highest interest, or their highest good?

So the Lovers card, on one level, can be about love and loving relationships. But on another level, I think a deeper, spiritual level, this can be about making decisions around what is right for your highest good, versus what is more about temptation and so on.

So, on the positive side, this could be about making those good decisions that are conscious decisions and following your highest path. But on the negative side, it could be that you do fall victim to temptation and you’re actually living out of alignment with what you’re really here to do, because of what the universe has placed you here to do. So, just be mindful of that with the Lovers card. Are you going to eat the apple, are you going to be tempted by this situation or not?

And I can’t help but notice that almost volcanic shape in the background, which I think is a little bit of a hint towards kind of, let’s say a climax of energy. And that sort of tension is most certainly there, but its now, do you act on it or do you leave in alignment with your godliness? Interesting card. So I imagine that one lined up with the devil card and what might transpire from that.

Nine of Cups

Okay, let’s move into the Nine of Cups. Now, the Nine of Cups is affectionately known as the Wish card. Which is really a sign that all your wishes will come true, so with that kind of phrasing, of course this is one of the good guys of Tarot.

And in the imagery we see a man, he’s seated, he’s got his arms crossed, he looks quite happy and content, and he’s surrounded by these nine cups. He has everything that he needs and he’s well aware of that.

So, on the positive side, this is an indication of contentment, happiness, joy, abundance, having everything that you need, having your wishes fulfilled, and so on. But, there is a dark side to this, and I suppose there’s an element of smugness in this card. I know that a number of people find that with the Nine of Cups.

He kind of looks like, “Yeah, look at me, I’ve got everything that I want, and it’s all mine, mine, mine.” There’s a risk here that when we do have everything that we want, are we still in a position to be able to share that with others, or do we sort of hold on to it for ourselves?

So if you saw this card, say, matched up with the Four of Pentacles, then I think you would have a bit of a problem here, because it would be a sign of keeping all of that goodness to yourself. But, if it was matched up with, say, the Six of Pentacles, then it’s more an indication of wanting to share your wealth and everything that you’ve got with others. So, interesting to see how that card might play out in context.

Just watch out for those feelings of perhaps greediness, or trying to hold on to what you’ve created and not letting others share in your own contentment and happiness.

Ten of Cups

And, finally, the Ten of Cups. Now, again, just look at this card and you think, “Oh, happy, happy!” We’ve got a rainbow that’s sparkling, and it’s got all of the ten cups in it, and we’ve got a couple who are embracing and it’s almost like they’re giving thanks for everything that they’ve got.

They’ve got their two children happily playing together; goodness knows how they made that happen. And they’ve got this gorgeous house sitting on a hill, and a little river going through. And my sense here is it’s saying, “Look at what we’ve got, this is our picture-perfect dream.”

And so the Ten of Cups, when we do see it in readings, it can signify that pinnacle of a relationship where you’re like, “Wow, we really do have everything here. We’ve got each other, we’ve got the family, and we’ve got the house that we wanted.” It is a dream come true.

But, there is a dark side, and the dark side with the Ten of Cups is that, sometimes, this can be a little bit too idyllic. And I think the thing that gives it away is those two kids playing really nicely together, and not pulling each other’s hair. It’s definitely that idyllic picture.

I am having a little bit of a joke, but there is certainly that concept of wanting things to be picture perfect, and yet we know, in life, that we might have perfection, but that perfection only lasts for one second. Not because we have unruly children, but because we are in this constant state of change, which I talked about in the previous episode around, say, the Death card.

And, because we’re in this constant state of change, we might achieve perfection, but that perfection is changing all of the time, so something else will happen, will occur, or evolve, that changes that picture-perfect thing. So, if we’re always striving for perfection and the idyllic setting, then we may be, actually, disappointed, because we’ll reach it, but then it changes yet again.

So it’s important, when you see the cups, you certainly give thanks for everything that you’ve got, and everything that’s coming to you. But also, just be aware of your expectations. Are you expecting perfect, or are you open to having a few little ripples along the way? You know, even the happiest of families still have their disagreements or their bad days, or so on. So just be mindful of that.

Alright, so we have walked our way through these five good guys of Tarot, and I hope, by now, you have an appreciation for both their light side and their dark side.
