Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick Using the Tarot

By January 4, 2012 May 17th, 2023

It’s that time of the year again when we start thinking of all the wonderful things we want to do and achieve over the coming twelve months. We busily go about creating our new year’s resolutions, from losing weight to getting healthy to exploring a new career direction.

But did you know that over 90% of new year’s resolutions end in failure?

Why?

Because we often end up choosing new year’s resolutions that are unachievable, too general, unrealistic or that are not actually important to us.

But what if we had a little divine intervention when we came up with our new year’s resolutions?

What if we could turn to the Tarot cards to provide guidance on where to focus and how to achieve our goals?

In this post, I share with you a practical way to use the Tarot cards that will ensure your new year’s resolutions stick and that you can create powerful change in your life for 2012.

Focus on What Matters

Instead of simply coming up with a few new year’s resolutions because they sound good at the time or because everyone else is doing them, we can use the Tarot cards to help focus us on what really matters.

First, write down 6-10 key priority areas in your life. For example, career, finances, relationships, health, family, spirituality, community, personal interests, etc.

Next, for each priority area, draw one Tarot card, asking, “What do I most need to focus on?” This provides the opportunity to tap into Universal knowledge to understand what needs your attention most in each of your key priority areas.

Now that you know where to focus, write down at least one goal or new year’s resolution based on the card you have drawn.

Three of PentaclesFor example, if my priority area was career and my focus card was the Three of Pentacles, I would want to consider a goal around teamwork and valuing other people’s knowledge and experience. I might choose a goal that goes something like, “Work with my team to complete Project X by June 2012.”

In developing your goals and new year’s resolutions, remember to use SMART goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-oriented and Time-specific.

Make it Happen with a Clear Action Plan

Now that you have your goals or resolutions, the next trick is to work out how to make these actually happen in the new year.

So much of the failure of new year’s resolutions is as a result of not planning how we will actually achieve our goals. It’s fine to say, “I want to lose 5 kilos” but if there’s no exercise plan or healthy eating plan, we’re likely to fail.

So, we go back to the cards and draw one each for the key priority areas, this time asking, “What do I need to do to achieve my goals?” This provides you with the insight on how to make the changes you want and need in the areas that matter most to you. Perfect!

Find out Where You’re Headed

Some of you will be content right now – you have clear insight into where you need to focus for the new year, you know what you’re working towards, and you know how to get there.

But some of you will want to know what’s going to happen!

So, go ahead, draw another card for each priority area, asking “What will next year bring in this part of my life?” Hopefully, the cards will be full of motivating messages for you. But if you find a so-called negative card or an undesirable outcome, work out what you may need to differently to change that outcome. You could draw a further card, or explore the outcome card in more detail.

So there you have it. A practical and easy way to use the Tarot to make your new year’s resolutions stick.
