As a professional Tarot reader, I love being able to give specific insight into specific issues with my Tarot cards, so when I am asked for a “general Tarot reading” from a client, I cringe!

It seems that I am not alone!

“My clients often ask for a general Tarot reading rather than a specific question. I'm new to reading Tarot professionally and am not sure how to respond. Any advice?”

And this is a special Ask Brigit video post where I answer your questions about the Tarot.

Today's question is from Angela who asks:

“My clients often ask for a general Tarot reading rather than a specific question. I'm new to reading Tarot professionally and am not sure how to respond. Any advice?”

Goodness – I have been reading Tarot professionally for over 15 years and general Tarot readings still freak me out!

But I have learned how to respond in a way that honours the client's needs aswell a s my own, while delivering a helpful and insightful Tarot reading.

So let me share…

My preference is to work with a specific question because I feel that the reading will be more specific also.

So the first thing I do is ask the client, “Is there a particular area on which you want to focus right now? What's on your mind, or what's keeping you up at night?”

Sometimes, a light bulb will go off in the client's mind and they'll get right into sharing a specific situation and question with you and away you go.

But if they insist on a general reading, then here's a simple way of honouring their request.

Shuffle the cards and then have them draw 3 cards. Lay those cards out and let the Tarot guide you.
You may find that as you start talking about the cards in front of you, a theme arises and the client can see how the cards relate to a specific area in their lives.

You can then focus the reading on this area. Or, you may find that the reading has a lot of Cups cards. Ah, so we're focused on relationships. Or perhaps a lot of Pentacles – right then, work and finances it is!

As you move through the Tarot cards, specific questions may arise. Simply draw another card from the deck to answer each new question.

Before you know it, you have quite a detailed and specific Tarot reading!
