3 Myths All Tarot Beginners Face that Kill Their Confidence and Make Reading Tarot Seem Impossible

blog-20140129-3-myths-all-tarot-beginners-face-that-kill-their-confidence-and-make-reading-tarot-seem-impossibleThere are more myths about Tarot than ancient deities. Everyone has their own personalised techniques, private rituals, rules and mantras about how you should and shouldn't read Tarot.

But for the Tarot beginner, taking this all in and knowing what is true and what is not can be overwhelming. For some, it can even be so off-putting that you feel like you want to quit Tarot altogether.

Today, I want to name (and bust) three myths that all Tarot beginners face that kill their confidence and make reading Tarot seem impossible.

Myth #1: You have to be psychic to read Tarot

Many people will have you believe that you have to be psychic to read Tarot.

That is, to be a good Tarot reader, you have to have some sort of supernatural power that allows you to see into the future, know what people are thinking, or receive messages from the Spirit world.

The truth is, you don't have to be psychic to be a good Tarot reader. In fact, anyone can learn to read Tarot – including you.

I'm not psychic. I used to think I had to be. So I started practising all sorts of strange rituals to become more psychic – staring at flames, playing with ESP cards and so on. But it never made me a better Tarot reader. In fact, I ended up feeling more and more frustrated so I ditched those rituals and instead focused on learning Tarot and opening up to my intuition.

So instead of giving up on Tarot completely because you don't have visions of the future or because you can't read people's minds, know that you can still learn how to read the Tarot cards.

All you need to do is SAY YES TO YOUR INTUITION.

We are all intuitive beings. Everyone of us.

So why aren't we all out there being super intuitive?

Because many people have shut down their intuition. They refuse to listen to their inner voice. They play down those intuitive ‘flashes' they get and pass them off as a silly feeling that means nothing. They opt for concepts that can be clearly explained by science and fact-based research.

But in the process, they are closing themselves off to their fullest potential because they are saying ‘no' to their intuition.

Instead, say ‘yes'. Say ‘yes' to those intuitive feelings you have about the people you love and their well-being. Say ‘yes' to those random, unexplainable messages you might receive that help you to navigate your life's path. And say ‘yes' to going with your heart, not just your head.

Because when you do, you open yourself up to the full possibility of life.

So let me reiterate, one last time. You don't have to be psychic to be a good Tarot reader. But you do need to say “yes” to your intuition and open your mind to believing that you are indeed an intuitive being.

Myth #2: You have to master every esoteric system to truly appreciate the Tarot cards

“Oh what? You don't know what the Kabbalistic Tree of Life is? And you haven't study the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn? And you know nothing of ancient mythology that underpins the Tarot?

“Who do you think you are?! A Tarot reader?! PFF!”

Oh good Lord.

I always worried about this type of conversation when I was learning to read Tarot. Would I suddenly be ‘singled out' by an ‘expert' for not knowing these supposedly essential esoteric systems? Was I a terrible Tarot reader because I didn't know anything about the Kabbalah?

But thankfully no. It never happened. I was never ‘found out'. Why? Because I actually didn't need to know these esoteric systems to be a good Tarot reader. In fact, I believe that it was a blessing that I didn't know about these systems when I was first starting out because had I tried to master these systems while mastering the Tarot, I would have become incredibly overwhelmed.

Don't get me wrong – there are some esoteric systems that are so beautifully aligned to Tarot that will help to expand your knowledge and appreciation for the cards even more. But if you're a Tarot beginner, you don't need to worry about them.

In fact, it's to your advantage if you leave these complex systems to the side while you focus only on what will help you to read the cards confidently and easily.

Learn about basic numerology and the elements so you can master the Minor Arcana quickly and easily. Get a feel for the symbolism used in the Tarot cards. Learn about the Fool's Journey so you can appreciate the flow through the Major Arcana cards. And most importantly, learn to connect with the Tarot on a personal level where you feel confident and at ease.

Myth #3: You have to memorise every Tarot card meaning before you can start reading

I can't tell you how many times I get emails from aspiring Tarot readers who want SO bad to become a better Tarot reader but who are struggling to memorise each and every Tarot card meaning.

“I can’t seem to commit the Tarot card meanings to memory. I try, but memorising 78 cards is SO hard.”

“How on earth am I supposed to remember every meaning of every Tarot card in the deck?!”

Many Tarot beginners learn the Tarot as if they were back in school. I'm talking memorisation and rote learning using flash cards, cheat sheets, charts, mini ‘exams' and other techniques to commit burn the cards to memory. But they are going about it all the wrong way.

You see, when you focus solely on memorising the Tarot card meanings, you completely miss the opportunity to create a personal and intuitive connection with the Tarot cards. And you lose the chance to tap into the deeper spiritual wisdom that makes the Tarot truly special.

Worse, learning Tarot quickly becomes a chore rather than a passion. It becomes tedious, boring and even stressful. It's all about what you can remember instead of what you truly sense and feel within the cards. Not quite the deeply spiritual path you had imagined, right?

You see, you can't just read about the Tarot cards and memorise the ‘official' meanings of the cards. You have to discover it for yourself. You have to feel the cards. You have to sense what they mean. You have to let them be part of your world. And you have to let yourself be part of their world.

It's simply not enough to rote learn the meanings. If you want to be an awesome Tarot reader, you have to build a personal and intuitive connection with the Tarot cards.

I believe in this SO much that I've made it my personal mission to help as many people as possible discover the true transformational power of the Tarot by engaging with the Tarot cards.

I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to a more enlightened and empowered life, and I know that Tarot is one way to achieve that.  I know that working with the Tarot can help many people on this spiritual journey.

If you're ready to build a personal connection with the Tarot cards, I've got something very special for you.
