We often turn to Tarot during times of vulnerability, hardship, and distress. When everything around us has crumbled away, and we're left to pick up the pieces and rebuild our lives once again.
It's times like these when we're searching deep within ourselves for the strength and courage we know we absolutely must find in order to start over, to persevere and to fight life's challenges.
So, what Tarot cards might you expect to see that indicate strength and courage? Here are my top ten.

Strength
Of course, the Strength card naturally lends itself to strength. But what I find most powerful about this card is that strength doesn't come from fighting the system or exerting extreme power over others. It comes from a place of peace and compassion, gently influencing the situation and surrendering to the ‘what is'. At its core, the Strength card represents inner strength and the power of the human spirit to overcome any obstacle.
Six of Wands
In the Six of Wands, strength rides alongside confidence. When we operate from a place of confidence and high self-esteem, we have the strength to deal with any challenges head on. The man in this card gains his strength by knowing that he has already done a good job and the people around him appreciate him and value his efforts. This in itself leads to even more courage to take on new challenges.
Emperor
The Emperor shows his strength through his power and authority over others. He wears heavy armour that protects him from external threats (and prevents him from being truly ‘vulnerable'). And he is seated firmly within his throne. The Emperor likes to be in a position of strength, where he can exert control and bring a sense of organisation and structure to his activities. He is not afraid of conflict and will not hesitate to use his force and power to protect those he cares about.
Star
Through the Star, we find courage in our hope and faith in the Universe. Courage, in this case, comes from an inner knowing that we are taken care of and everything is going to work out in the end, just as it is supposed to. The more we allow ourselves to become vulnerable and open the more courageous and strong we become.
Lovers
One aspect of the Lovers card that receives the least amount of attention is that of making moral choices. When we take the ‘high road' and make decisions based on our true, authentic values, we are displaying a true act of courage and strength. And even more so when that ‘high road' is often a more challenging, more difficult path that serves to test our moral conviction.
The Kings
The Kings in the Tarot exude strength and courage – often as a result of their power and authority. For example, the King of Swords displays strength through speaking and upholding the truth. Or the King of Cups displays emotional strength and courage, especially as he remains calm and compassionate, even in the face of disaster. The Kings have firmly established themselves within their element and are not prepared to budge – now that's strength!
The Knights
The Knights in the Tarot have the courage to pursue a path that is meaningful to them. They don't know what's up ahead, but that doesn't matter. They are on a mission to reach their objective or to create a positive change in the world. That takes true courage and strength – to so fully commit to a path, without truly knowing where it might lead.
Nine of Wands
Sure, the man in the Nine of Wands may not look particularly strong and courageous given his bandages and his defensive, even paranoid, look. But what this card demonstrates is perseverance in the face of adversity. He's not going to fall over just yet. Instead, he is going to continue to protect himself and push through to the very end.
Seven of Wands
The Seven of Wands is a sign of battling against all odds to maintain one's position. The man in this card is under threat; but he continues to stand his ground and fight. He's not going to let anyone knock him off his perch without a fight. That determination takes strength and courage, particularly when faced with a row of threatening sticks!
Six of Swords
The Six of Swords reminds us of the courage to leave behind something that is no longer serving us. It is hard to know when to let go and make the transition to something new and unknown. But there comes a time when push comes to shove and it's clear that you must move on. Letting go is the hardest part.
