Ever thought of the Tarot cards as sexy?! It never really crossed my mind until I started listening to the “Raw Sex in Tarot” podcast over at Beyond Worlds Tarot. I couldn’t stop thinking of Tarot cards that conveyed sex and intimacy!
So, here’s my top 10 Tarot cards for sex.
Knight of Wands – The Knight of Wands is your typical flirt! He is full of passion and lust, and he has so much sexual energy it just oozes out of him. Great in bed, but once he loses interest, he’s gone.
Ace of Wands – Just look at the picture. This is an incredibly phallic card with a sprouting wand that rises to attention (if you catch my drift). Sexually, things are going very well when you see the Ace of Wands.
Devil – The Devil is a passionate, hedonistic and lust-filled card indicating great sex but where there is something amiss. The relationship may be bordering on the side of obsession or it has become angst-ridden. You might also be involved with someone who is not fully available to you, yet you keep going back for more.
Three of Cups – Threesome! Upright, this is a fun threesome, but reversed you may find that three is a crowd and you’d much prefer there were only two of you involved.
Star – I love the Star for her purity, oneness and transformative energy. She kneels naked, connected to the earth and the sky. Think tantric, connected sex that is highly spiritual in nature.
Eight of Wands – Quick and dirty. ‘Nuff said.
Ace of Pentacles – Enter through the gate in this picture and you’ll find a large egg (AKA pentacle), waiting to be fertilised. So, if baby making isn’t on your agenda, use protection!
Four of Swords – I can’t help but think of the missionary position when I see the Four of Swords. This is sex that has become passive and routine.
Eight of Swords – With a woman blindfolded and bound, the Eight of Swords speaks of bondage and S&M. To make sure that this is completely consensual and safe, look to more positive cards in the reading.
Temperance – Opposites attract, creating a beautiful balance between two different individuals. There is good chemistry and you’re likely to take your time with each other, caring for and tending to each other’s every need.

Hi Brigit
Overall a very good interpretation, and I especially agree about your thoughts on The Devil card when it comes to sex and relationships.
I am strictly a novice when it comes to reading Tarot cards, but I am drawn to The Two of Cups which suggests a two-way attraction. Much safer than The Devil, or does this card have hidden meanings?
Diana
Two of cups suggest friendship. It need not be sexual in nature.Devil is a negative card and denotes lust, and obsession.
Aasheesh
Great suggestion with the Two of Cups. I can just imagine two people looking lovingly into each other’s eyes for hours and hours on end!
Aasheesh is right in that the Two of Cups can indicate friendship, but I also feel it indicate a new romantic relationship as well.
A very entertaining piece.
Hey Biddy
You’ll find that there are quite explicit decks out there to enhance what you’ve written already, esp. The Devil. The Decameron, Sensual Wicca, Manara… to name 3
Blessings
Louise
Hi Louise,
Great to see you here! Excellent suggestions with Tarot decks that are specially designed for such a topic! The Thoth deck is another which comes to mind.
Brigit
Nice perspective on Tarot and Sex. I am surprised you left out Lovers card. Also Empress card oozes lot of feminine sexuality.
Aasheesh
I did consider the Lovers card, but then there were so many other cards I wanted to include. Maybe it should have been a Top 20 not a Top 10!! The Empress is also a great suggestion.
Thanks for your comment, Aasheesh. I also wondered about The Lovers card, and I agree that the Empress card has a “voluptuous” feel to it.
I prefer the “Two of Cups” to “The Lovers” for exactly the reason you pointed out – that it suggests friendship which may not necessarily be sexual in nature.
I know many people who have been involved in relationships of the kind that the “Devil” card indicates, and there is no doubt that obsession, addiction, lust and a lot of negativity go hand in hand with this influence.
Diana
There’s rolling around the hillside with the Fool, feeling the magic with the Magician, discovering the depths of the feminine with the High Priestess and the Empress (was it a threesome with the Magician, HP and Empress that made it so popular?), the master Emperor probably invented Viagra, and we know the Hierophant makes it religious…nice article, it’s making them all speak to me about it!
GOLD! I love it!
The Devil can be positive in my readings as well, for ex., what is a good relationship without a little lust? Answer: not a good one, it’s flat….also in regards to love it can sometimes signify permanence. Yup, we need a Top 20.
The difference of sexual undertones of Star card, and Devil is so striking !
Star is all about deep spiritual connection which leads to satisfying sex.Devil is about lust ,illicit, and obsessive feelings.Star is truly my favourite card. The figure speaks for itself.
Aasheesh
Hi Brigit I love your interpretation about tarot cards for sex. It helps me to understandthem very well. In my opinon Nine of pentacles also represents sex card. This card depicts a lady of pleasures who enjoys sex and money. She is having venus which shows her a mistress or a lady whose husband is living at distant place but she is enjoying her life.
Two of cups also shows the sex card but this card depicts the pure love and sex not lust The figures in the cards themselves speak about their pure nature of sex
Great suggestions! I had never thought of the Nine of Pentacles in that way, but I can totally see it now.
Brigit…this is wonderful…opening our minds to endless possibilities and interpretations. Thanks so much for sharing,
I was wondering why label 8 of Wands “dirty”?
The pristine nature in the background suggests, at least to me, sex born of natural urges, yes, maybe even a bit animalistic, harsh, quick, unthinking, but not really dirty.
I’d call dirty something like the 5 of Swords, where one person is dominant and even sneering, and the other one (two?) hurt.
Devoid of emotions sex becomes dirty.8 of wands reprsents this energy.Just a quick physical relief.
Hi Argenta,
I certainly appreciate your different point of view! Perhaps the emphasis is more on the ‘quick’ than the ‘dirty’!
Yes, the quick part I get
As for dirty, perhaps we’ve all got our own definitions!
I ever drew a Ace of Wands and The Emperor as a person’s feeling toward me. What kind of feeling is that??
Ace of Wands – gets turned on very easily!! Emperor – very masculine. I would say that’s quite a strong sexual attraction.
So, in the other word, the feeling is about lust?
With the potential for something more substantial later down the track. Ace is the potential, Emperor is the promise of commitment.
Let me get this right, this person is attracted sexually to me. And then this person wants to commit with me? Wow, a relationship?
I got Devil card and apparently I’ll have a lot of sex but it’s so clear I won’t be.
I just know I don’t want sex. I don’t even want to get married.
What do you think this is?
You may be feeling bonded or chained to an idea or perspective. You may actually be setting restrictions for yourself that are causing you to feel trapped in your love life. It doesn’t always have to be about sex, but the limitations you set on yourself or that are set by others who have had an influence on you. All good cards!
I know it’s obvious and The Lovers card is supposed to be about choice, but because of its name I think it can be about sex too. There’s a reason it’s not called “The Married Couple” or “The Partners.” While I see the Two of Cups as any type of emotional relationship (sexual or otherwise), I think The Lovers card is more blatantly sexual.
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing!
Brigit
What would be your interpretation for a reversed knight of wands?
Often very impulsive, flitting from one relationship to another, unable to settle and commit.
Brigit
I drew a reversed knight of wands and the sun as this person’s feeling towards me? I can’t figure this out. Thanks!!!
“Just fooling around” comes to mind
Nothing really substantial in the relationship, but just a bit of fun.
Brigit
Thanks for the info. Fooling around sounds good to me. LOL!
Brigit
I did the reading again with someone else in mind and got great results. I pulled the world and the six of wands as this person’s feeling towards me. The world means that the person is kinky and likes to try new things. For the six of wands it means that sexual chemistry is so high that you need to call the fire department to extinguish the passion. LOL! This is fun.
I’m totally surprised no one has mentioned the Ace of cups in this post yet. To me, if your talking about sex, the Ace of Cups is that phenomenal orgasm! Also, I was wondering about the hanged man and the possibility of it pointing to a dom/sub relationship in the bedroom. What do you think??
Haha! I love it! Beautiful!
Well, I happened to draw the hanged man when my friend asked what her sex life was gonna be like with this new guy she was thinking of. Normally, I’d think of the hanged man as abstinence But knowing her, it made me think again… Could it point to a sub relationship?
Very creative thinking!
I was expecting to see 10 cups here as complete satisfaction ….
Nice… and very loving, too.
The 8 of wands makes a powerful heated love making. This reveals multiple organism that the woman is receiving from the male. Since wands resemble that of a phallic (males penis). This man delivers with full passion and vigor. The love making is without doubt sizzling hot. I would said both parties were electric with each other. Since the 8 of wand astrological is Mercury and Sagittarius, He is definitely a smoother talker sexually. He knows how to wet the panties. The Devil card is completely opposite of the lover card. The devil indicate sexual abuse as well as binding situation, this card is clearly binding the distasteful seeking only heighten pleasure; there is no oneness, there is a lot manipulation and control in this card. It sums up sexual addiction, infidelity, lying cheater of the heart. The eight of sword, This individual is sexually repress or perhaps enjoys being tied up. She is very isolated and sees sex in a negative way. She does not know how to romance her man sexually. Her communication is boring to said the least. This person would sent her man out to cheat.
Wonderful ideas – thanks so much for sharing.
I did a 3 card reading this morning just as a general what’s on for today and I got
Ace of wands , 3 swords and 2 of cups in that order.
I read it as confusion and conflict over a loving sexual relationship?
I think the ace of swords is extremely sexual. It could mean a man wanting to have sex
with someone, but he is surrounded by problems preventing him from doing it. the ace
of swords shows him fucking regardless of how much problems he he has to overcome.
Interesting! I had a dream I was playing with dolphins and they were nudging me to look back towards the shore to notice the Knight of Wands sitting on a horse…
…six month later, I met Mr Knight of Wands, and six weeks later, he proposed…six months later, we were married…for 22 not-always-happy-but-not-always-miserable years.
Oh and..the sex was brilliant *wink*
Gorgeous!
Could be. It all depends on the context. Without knowing the full picture, it’s difficult to give you a full interpretation.
