Joanna requested a Horseshoe Tarot reading with me to help her understand why her eBook was not selling. She wrote, “I have been working at being a professional writer for many years. I spent much longer on my most recent book than the others but could not land an agent or editor after much effort. I felt this book was different and self-published it. I’ve gotten good feedback but I am having trouble succeeding with sales. I am wondering if I am blocking myself or if there is something bigger I’m not seeing.”
Here’s how her Tarot reading transpired…
Dear Joanna,
Thank-you for visiting biddytarot.com and requesting a Tarot reading. It is a pleasure to be able to read for you!
You have requested a Tarot reading in regards to your latest book which you self-published. Unfortunately it hasn’t had as much success as you would like. You would like to know what’s blocking you and how to increase your sales. I concentrated carefully on your question while shuffling the Tarot cards for you. I then laid the cards out and this is what they told me.
Past – King of Wands reversed
Present – Moon reversed
Near Future – High Priestess
The Answer – Ten of Cups reversed
Surrounding Energies – Magician reversed
Attitude – Seven of Pentacles reversed
Outcome – Five of Cups reversed
Well, you asked if you were blocked in some way… the Tarot is giving you a resounding ‘yes’! All but one card is reversed in this reading, so I feel that there are definitely things getting in the way of your success. What’s more, it may not be visible to you right now and may be in your blind spot. Hopefully this reading will help to bring to light what’s happening.
The King of Wands reversed suggests that you may have gotten some poor advice from someone you thought you could trust. Perhaps it was a mentor, an agent or a guru in the field. You may have paid a lot of money or spent a lot of time with this person, thinking that they would guide you and give you the path to success. However, you have since realised that this person didn’t have your best interests in mind and may have been only looking after their own interests. You have now discounted this advice and have tried to get your approach back on track.
Currently, the Moon reversed indicates that you are working through any deep fears or anxieties that have been troubling you, and trying to resolve these to free yourself up to think about your book. Perhaps you have struggled with fear of failure (or fear of success??) or worried what others might think of you if you took a particular path. You are starting to see this for what it is and realising that these fears and anxieties are unfounded and unhelpful. What’s more, there may have been some hidden factors involved with your book that you were previously unaware of, but these are now coming to light.
In the future, the High Priestess sees you beginning to trust your intuition and your gut feeling about what to do. My take on these three cards in a row is that you initially followed the advice of someone else who didn’t really take the time to get to know you, how you operate or what your book was really about. You are now starting to realise that even though you invested in this advice, it wasn’t helpful. The pendulum is beginning to swing back to trusting your own way of doing things, rather than relying on someone else to tell you. You know, if you really go with what feels intuitively right, then you will bring success to this project. So listen carefully to your inner voice and what it is telling you to do.
The Ten of Cups reversed typically appears when you are going against your values and living life in a way that is not harmonious or true to who you really are. Again, I feel that you have taken a path that was not really ‘you’ and this may be why you are not succeeding. To increase sales, you need to return to the energy of the Nine of Cups and do what feels right to you. Perhaps this isn’t so much about how can I make the most money, but how can I make this truly fulfilling and fun? The Nine of Cups is about deep fulfilment and contentment with the way things are going. It isn’t about material gain but emotional gain. Think about how you can incorporate this mindset into your book marketing strategy. What is it you love to do? How can you bring your book into this?
The Magician reversed suggests that there are always going to be dodgy salespeople around you who will want to take your money with ‘guaranteed success’. Trouble is, they often don’t live up to their promise and you are left with a hole in your pocket! So, don’t make the same mistake you did with the reversed King of Wands. Learn to trust yourself with this project rather than forking out more money for other people to sell your product. Again, do what feels right to you, on a deeper, ethical basis.
The reversed Seven of Pentacles shows that you are feeling frustrated that the financial rewards have not yet appeared, especially after you have invested so much time and energy into this. However, remember that success does not always come overnight. Perhaps you are meant to go through these challenges and tests in order to build your character or develop a more robust sales strategy. Be patient! Know that the timeline for this project is a little longer than your other projects.
And finally with the Five of Cups reversed, I can see that you’re really disappointed with how it has turned out, but you will soon see that there are new opportunities that are available to you. There’s no point crying over spilt milk and lamenting about all the ‘could have beens’. Accept that not everything has gone to plan, but work hard now at changing your approach to something that is more aligned to your true inner values. I feel that the opportunities are there to promote your book and increase your sales, but it really has to come from the heart and from a place of optimism.

My Tarot reading was so insightful that I felt almost jolted by it. Brigit picked up some key elements of things that have happened in the past few months that were very specific and personal to me. They were not included in my email, but she really tuned into what I was feeling and thinking. It was amazing! It was like I suddenly had a flashlight to help me wander through a dark forest. I was especially amazed when she said I’d taken some “”bad”" advice from a friend and was now correcting that wrong turn. Spot on.
I checked in with Joanna a few months after her Tarot reading to see how things were going. Here is what she wrote:
Hi Brigit! It’s very nice to hear from you, thank you for checking in.
I have not yet had any further success with my book. What you said rang very true to me though, so I have changed my approach to it. I’ve taken a more positive attitude and am looking into different ways to promote it. I’ve gotten some great feedback and am just keeping my eyes and ears open for that thing that will help me break through this rut.
A funny and unexpected thing happened after I changed my attitude though. I was traveling and met a guy and for the first time fell madly in love. I am now living with him and hoping to continue working on my book and writing, but because of this unexpected change I may have to put it on hold for awhile. It was very sudden but it certainly gave me hope that amazing things can happen at anytime, and I should remember this applies to my career as well as my love life.
Also, you said something in your reading to me about not following my instincts in the past. This really hit home, and although I felt it applied most to my writing, it certainly helped lead me to this path I’m on. So what i wanted to say is even though I am still looking for career success your advice to follow my gut had an unexpected result and I found love! A voice inside me was strongly saying go to a particular city, and on an impulse at the last minute I did. I wanted to listen to my inner guide more, as you suggested, because I felt it would lead me somewhere great if I let it. I didn’t get what I was looking for, but something I had wanted all along instead. Life’s funny like that!
