A ‘Real Life’ Example of the Finding a Job Tarot Reading

Shelly requested a Tarot reading to help her to find the right job for her. She wrote, “I have recently applied for several jobs and had some interviews but not been sucsessful even though I have come close. I would like guidance on how I can improve and if I’m in the right field. Or if I should stay where I am. And on my attitude to work itself.”

Here’s how the reading transpired…

Dear Shelly,

Thank-you for visiting biddytarot.com and requesting a Tarot reading. It is a pleasure to be able to read for you! And happy birthday for a few days ago!

You have requested a Tarot reading in regards to finding the right job for you. You write that you have applied for a number of roles and have come close, but not close enough. I concentrated carefully on your question while shuffling the Tarot cards for you. I then laid the cards out and this is what they told me.

  • Your career aspirations – Seven of Wands reversed
  • What you need to do to achieve your aspirations – Eight of Wands reversed
  • What job opportunities exist in the current market – Chariot reversed
  • Where and/or how you will find the right job – Knight of Wands reversed
  • What are the challenges in finding a job – Nine of Wands
  • What you need to do to excel in your interviews – Ace of Pentacles reversed
  • What strengths do you need to emphasise – Eight of Swords
  • What are your development areas – Page of Swords reversed
  • What do you need to do next to find the right job – World
  • Overall outcome in finding a job – Justice reversed

Firstly, look at how many reversed cards are in your reading! This suggests that there are many blockages that are getting in the way of you finding the right job, and these blockages are likely to come from within. Look also at how many Wands cards are at the start of this reading. Wands reflect motivation, energy levels and passion. With these two factors combined, I am sensing that you are out there trying to find a job, but without a clear perspective of what sort of job you really want and what will truly inspire you. I almost feel that it may be a good time to stop the job search and use this time to contemplate your broader career and life goals. You may be chasing the wrong types of jobs, and this is becoming apparent to your potential employers. So, instead of pursuing more applications for jobs that you’re not even really sure you want, it may be best to slow down the search for now and consider your options. Anyway, let’s take a deeper look at these cards…

The Seven of Wands reversed indicates what you don’t want in a career. This card shows a man standing on top of a hill, confronted by six wands all fighting him from below. He is desperately trying to defend his turf against the competition and the opposition, and is doing this successfully. However, when this card is reversed, it can indicate that you are becoming overwhelmed with having to work in a competitive environment and you are beginning to tire and become disengaged. You may be seeking work that is easier, where you have more ability to be successful because you are supported and other people believe in you. You are growing tired of having to deal with opposition every time you bring up a new idea or try to improve processes.

The Eight of Wands reversed is about actually stalling your plans and putting a hold on whatever you’re doing right now. Often times, it reflects that an external force is delaying your plans, but in this case, I feel that it is a sign to slow down your own job search activities because it is leading you to feel more stressed about your work situation. Not only are you having to deal with competition in your current work, you are also having to deal with it in your job applications and this is wearing you down. Now, I’m not saying that the job application process will ever be a breeze, but I do think you need to carefully manage your energy levels at this present time and keep a check on how you’re feeling. The Eight of Wands can also indicate travel, and reversed it suggests the postponement of travel. If you are planning on travelling, would it be valuable to you to postpone it?

In the current market, I feel that the job opportunities are actually quite limited. Furthermore, it seems to be the case that it is outside of your control and thus can be very frustrating when you learn that recruitment for a role that you have applied for has been delayed or put off, for example. This to me is another reason why it may be best to take a break from the job search for now, because the job market is not particularly buoyant and you may be struggling to really steer your search in the direction you want.

The Knight of Wands reversed is a very hasty and impulsive young man! It reflects that you may be rushing into finding a job without really having convinced yourself of what you really want or what will inspire you. I see this card in this position as another sign to postpone your search until you are clearer in your own mind about what you want. You need to have a better plan for what you want to do not just in the next few months, but the next 3-5 years. Now, you don’t have to know exactly what your career path should look like, but it is important you know what you are looking for in a career and your daily work, so that you can choose the best options now that set you up for success later.

The challenges in finding a job now are that you feel overwhelmed and stressed with your search so far and you are beginning to become weary. I feel that your energy levels and confidence has been reduced and you may not be doing as great a job in your interviews as possible. Again, another clear sign that you would get a lot of value out of putting off the search for a couple of months while you restore your energy and enthusiasm.

To excel in your interviews, the Ace of Pentacles reversed suggests that you may need to be going for roles that are a stretch or a challenge for you – something that represents a promotion or a pay rise. You may just be looking for lateral moves at the moment, but potential employers may be wanting to see more of a go-getter attitude and a desire to move up in the world. You need to show that you are hungry for promotion and are always willing to go the extra mile to be recognised.

With the Eight of Swords, I sense that you are struggling to really understand and convey your strengths in an interview. You may be quite limited in what you believe are your strengths, and these may not always match what the potential employer is looking for. I think there is a huge opportunity to explore your strengths further and then go through a process of matching these with what the employer wants. You need to be able to branch out from just the stock-standard approach. For example, a stay-at-home mum could say that she is just a mum, or she could say that she has amazing time management and organisational skills, an incredible level of patience and an ability to coach and mentor others! So, think about how you can express your strengths outside of the usual way, and broaden your horizons.

In terms of development areas, the Page of Swords reversed suggests that you need to be able to deliver on what you promise. Sometimes, this Page makes promises he knows he can’t deliver, if only to impress or please others or get himself out of a sticky situation. On the flipside, this card may suggest that you need to do a better job of talking yourself up. You may need to ‘sell’ your career stories by emphasising your successes and your direct input into those successes. I know it feels strange, but try to say “I” rather than “we” in your interviews to show how you directly impacted the situation.

To find the right job, the World card suggests that there is a current project underway that must first be completed before you are ready for the next phase. In light of the cards in this reading, I sense that it may actually be better to stay in your current role for the time being, particular if you are involved in a major project, and wait until that is completed. This way, you will have another success story to talk about and you will buy some time to re-energise yourself and prepare for the next phase of job applications. This card can also indicate that a world trip or overseas travel may be just what you need to ‘find yourself’ once again.

Finally, when Justice comes up reversed in the context of a work question, you may be being treated unfairly in your workplace. However, there may not be a great deal which you can do to change this in the short term. Think critically and logically about what is happening and do not allow emotion to make you “cut off your nose to spite your face.” Even when reversed, this card carries the warning that you need to be sure that your work/life balance is where it needs to be. Too much emphasis on either aspect of life throws the other into imbalance. Seek the best advice you can find before making any major changes with regard to your working life. Yes, things may be unjust. However the solution may be of longer term than simply leaving or creating a confrontation about it. Slow down.

So overall, consider whether it would be better to hold off the job search until you feel more inspired about your next career move. There may also be an important project that you are currently working on that you would be best to complete before changing jobs. I feel that if you give it a bit more time and breathing space you will be in a much better place mentally and emotionally, and your job search should be more successful.

I hope this reading has helped you. If you have any questions or require clarification on any of the cards drawn here, please email me. Shelly’s Feedback

Hi Brigit

I decided to stay with my current employer for the time being, there is so much uncertainty within the job market right now I felt that was the best thing to do. Plus having had several knock backs I felt I needed to regroup and rethink my next step (basically what the reading said). However I am now in a new role as a result of a restructure, which I hope will be a good step, so will wait to see what that brings – I formally start my new post tomorrow.

Best wishes

Shelly
