A ‘Real Life’ Example of the Career Direction Tarot Reading
Dear Anna,
Thank-you for visiting biddytarot.com and requesting a Tarot reading. It is a pleasure to be able to read for you!
You have requested a Career Direction Tarot reading in regards to whether there will be any change to your job and career. I concentrated carefully on your question while shuffling the Tarot cards for you. I then laid the cards out and this is what they told me.
- What do you ultimately aspire to in your life in general – King of Wands reversed
- What do you ultimately aspire to in your career – Six of Wands reversed
- What is the ideal job for you – Justice
- What is the ideal work environment/company for you – Knight of Swords reversed
- What are your two key strengths – Fool and Eight of Pentacles
- How can you leverage these strengths – Five of Wands
- What are your two key development areas – Four of Cups reversed and Four of Pentacles reversed
- How you can address these development areas – Hermit reversed
- What do you need to do to find the right career/job for you – King of Pentacles
- Your career direction in the next six months – Star reversed

The reversed King of Wands shows that you are lacking direction in your life in general. You are really struggling with where your passion, energy and drive lie and you may be feeling quite flat about your future. Nothing is really exciting you and instead you may be feeling stuck in limbo. Upright, this King usually knows exactly where he’s heading and he’s not afraid to dream big. But reversed, we begin to see someone who is doubtful of the future and who feels quite uninspired by it all.
In your career, the reversed Six of Wands indicates that you may have recently had a fall from grace or a difficult situation come up at work that didn’t show you up in the best light. Now, you want to get out of the limelight for a little while and do something else where people don’t know you or don’t have a predetermined view of you. You don’t want to be the centre of attention, and you don’t want to carry around a particular reputation which you know doesn’t truly reflect who you are.
The Justice card quite literally suggests that a job in the justice or legal system would be a great fit. This may span from being a police officer, to working in the courts, to being a paralegal, to working in the legal industry. You are attracted to the black and white nature of the law, that there are set rules and ways of doing things that lead to the right outcomes. You seek truth in all you do, so ensuring that others only tell the truth and adhere to the rules is something that you may be quite drawn to.
The Knight of Swords is a very ambitious young man who is willing to do whatever it takes to reach his goals. Reversed, I get the feeling that you have already had your fair share of competitive, ambitious people throughout your career and working life, and you are now ready for a much less dog-eat-dog environment. You are sick of having to work alongside people who will just play the game to get what they want, and who rail-road others on their quest for personal success. Perhaps you’ve been burned before, and now all you want is a slower lifestyle where there is not such a heavy focus on targets or performance. The public service is starting to come to mind?
In terms of your strengths, the Fool and Eight of Pentacles combined suggests that you have a strong desire to learn a new skill and then apply it in a new job. Even though you have worked for many years now, you are happy to try something different and study hard in order to move in a different direction. The Fool shows an acceptance that you need to start a new journey and that you will be starting from square one again. And the Eight of Pentacles, a card of apprenticeship, shows a willingness to learn and then apply new skills. This is a great combination if you are thinking of changing careers and there is a study component that is part of it.
While this seems like a very clear path – to learn a new skill and take on a new job or career – the Five of Wands indicates that you are still battling internally about whether this is the right path for you. You may have a desire to learn a new skill, but you also feel like there are other competing priorities for your time. You are in two minds about it and you can’t work out if this is the best option. You may need to battle it out more in your head and perhaps share with a friend your different options and the pros and cons associated with each one. There may be some tension or discomfort, but this is all part of making a transition to a new state.
The next three cards, which relate to your development areas, are all reversed. I think this is really interesting because it suggests that perhaps you are not fully aware of your weaknesses and how they may be impacting you. It isn’t that you think you’re perfect. It’s just that these may not be completely in your conscious mind. Looking at the now may help to build a better understanding of what you need to develop.
It’s very interesting that both cards are Fours. Four is a card of stability, certainty and foundation. It is often an indication of commitment and loyalty and in this case, it may show that you have not been very loyal to your previous employers. Perhaps you have only been in a job for a couple of years before moving to the next. You may not have given yourself enough time to put down your roots and get a lay of the land.
With the reversed Four of Cups, you seem to get bored and distracted very easily at work. Perhaps you have been doing repetitive work lately and it is very disengaging. Instead of trying to find something good in what you’re doing, you tend to avoid work all together and you check out. You might be inclined to take a few sick days here and there, too.
With the reversed Four of Pentacles, you may have some trouble in managing the financial aspects of your work. Have you had to manage budgets before? You may have seen money slip through your fingers and you need to apply better financial management skills. This is also a card of loyalty and the reversal suggests that you have struggled to settle down in the one job for a while.
The reversed Hermit suggests again that you may not be fully aware of these weaknesses or development areas and you have not given yourself enough time to reflect on them. So, now that we have established what they are, consider them carefully and determine what more you can learn about your engagement levels at work and your commitment and loyalty. Do you see these as development areas? What impact are they having on your work? What can you do to change these behaviours and thoughts? The Hermit asks you to look very deeply into this and understand almost the spiritual significance of these two development areas.
The King of Pentacles suggests that you would be wise to turn to a mentor who is already very well established in their career. This is someone who is very much a business leader and who has established a long and successful career. He may be a past boss or someone you have met along your career path who you respect and look up to. The King of Pentacles likes to be able to help others, so he will be more than happy to share his wisdom with you.
And finally, the reversed Star suggests that while the tension is building around finding a new job and possibly a new career, I sense that you will stay in your current role for the time being. I don’t think this is necessarily the right option for you, but I think it will be as a result of feeling too scared to make such a significant change in your life when you don’t know what it will bring or where you’re heading generally. This card is about out with the old and in with the new, but for some reason, you’re resisting this change. It may be a lack of faith and belief that it will work out as it is meant to.
So, overall, Anna, I feel that you are starting to get itchy feet in your career and will want to make a move soon, mostly because you do not enjoy what you’re doing now rather than you have a particular job or career that you want to move to. I think you would really enjoy a legal role or working in the legal industry, but somewhere where there is less competitive and ambitious behaviour. You seem to have a strength for learning new skills and applying them to your work, but you need to believe that it is going to benefit you in the long run. You also need to give some more thought and reflection to your potential weaknesses and how you can improve on the areas of engagement at work and loyalty. Turn to a successful business person as a mentor who can guide you and perhaps get you into new organisations through his contacts. And don’t be afraid to make the change you need. Even if you are nervous about whether you will be successful, you will never know unless you try it.
