Weekly Tarot Card (Mar 22) – Hierophant Reversed

HierophantThe card drawn for this week is the Hierophant reversed.

On the Rider Waite deck, the Hierophant is portrayed as a man dressed in all sorts of regalia. Behind him stand two firm, stone pillars, and before him kneel two rather insignificant and humble men. This Hierophant appears to be the guardian of what lies beyond those pillars. And the men kneeling in front of him seem to be in awe at his greatness and his apparent power. In fact, two keys lie at the Hierophant’s feet symbolising that he is total control of who enters and who doesn’t.

Upright, the Hierophant represents tradition, structure, and group conformity. It reflects a time when you feel ‘safe’ and secure in the presence of structure, when you follow convention and tradition, and when you abide by the ‘rules’.

Reversed, however, the Hierophant indicates that you are feeling restricted or constrained by structure and rules, and you have lost a lot of flexibility and control in your life as a result. You have a strong desire to go against the grain and break free from convention. You may be tempted to go about your business in an unorthodox manner, to do something that is out of character or against social norms.

The Hierophant can also represent a person who is in a leadership role or position of authority. He may indicate a religious leader, a father figure, or even a boss at work. You may find that this person is ruling with an iron fist, forcing others to conform and abide by the rules, afraid to step out and do something different or challenge the status quo. If this person is ‘in charge’, then you may have little choice but to follow.

So, this week, challenge the status quo, ask why you are following convention and discover ways to break free from the norm.
