Top 10 Love Tarot Cards
With Valentine’s Day just gone, what better time to look at the top ten Tarot cards that indicate love, romance and relationships!
The Lovers—The Lovers! Need I say more?! The Lovers is the ultimate Tarot card for love and represents a unique bond and deep connection between two people. Its presence in a reading reflects a very authentic relationship that is built on mutual trust and respect.
Two of Cups—The Two of Cups indicates a strong bond between two people and often reflects the commitment made to one another within a monogamous relationship.
Ten of Cups—The Ten of Cups is typical of a happy family within a warm and loving home. It reflects the presence of deep family values and a feeling of completion, having found the perfect partner and having raised the perfect children.
Four of Wands—The Four of Wands is a card of celebration and a safe and secure home environment. It often reflects a wedding, engagement or other event whereby a relationship is becoming more serious.
Ten of Pentacles—This Ten reflects a well-established relationship (typically a defacto relationship or marriage) and a solid family life.
Ace of Cups—The Ace of Cups heralds a new relationship filled with excitement, joy and happiness. This is the type of bliss you once experienced as a teenager in love, with butterflies in your stomach and a desire to spend every waking minute with your new love.
Knight of Cups—The Knight of Cups is your ‘knight in shining armour’ and appears in a reading when you are being courted or romanced by someone special. He /she is attractive, creative and in touch with his/her feelings – very much the SNAG (sensitive new-age guy) type.
Empress—The Empress is a beautiful, abundant, fertile and expressive woman. She represents sensuality within a relationship and is indicative of a deeply fulfilling connection between you and your partner.
Emperor—The Emperor reflects a very sturdy male figure and may suggest the presence of a long-term partner.
Hierophant—The Hierophant represents tradition, structure and religion. This card can therefore indicate a long-term, committed relationship or marriage that is very traditional.

Hi Biddy,
Thanks so much for this list! I find it really useful. There is one thing that I find a little confusing. As far as I understand all of these cards can represent a good relationship in general. For example, if I do a reading for a friend and Lovers card comes up it can mean that we’ll be really good friends, right? How can I tell if we will be more than friends? Which cards would clarify that? For example, one combination I had was the Fool with the Lovers (as an outcome), is this outcome a ‘friendship’ or the ‘lovers’?
Many thanks in advance
November 30th, 2010
Great question! I think it really comes down to the other cards in the reading and also your ‘gut feel’ or intuition as you do the reading (although, when you are reading for yourself it can be hard to distinguish between what you ‘sense’ may happen versus what you ‘want’ to happen!). With the Fool and the Lovers cards, I would see this as an opportunity to take the friendship in a new direction, one which is much closer and perhaps much more romantic.
Of course, why not ask the cards specifically… Draw two cards – one for the outcome if you continue as friends, and one for the outcome if you move it to a romantic relationship – and see what comes up! Don’t be afraid to ask the cards a direct question, especially if you are feeling confused about a particular issue.
I hope this helps,
Biddy

Thank you so much for your reply, Biddy and for your advice!
It’s a great idea to ask the specific question like this. That’s exactly what I’ve done. I got 5 swords for friendship and 7 cups for the romantic relationship. Not sure what that means exactly, but doesn’t look good for the friendship, I guess…
Biddy, many thanks for you website there are so many wonderful articles and resources to read and improve one’s skills and understanding of the tarot world!

I would see the Five of Swords as almost having to compromise with a friendship and not really feeling satisfied with the outcome. The Seven of Cups is quite promising – a romance will open the doors to many different possibilities, some good, some bad. The key is not to get too caught up in the fantasy and illusion of it and to remain grounded.
Hope this helps!

Thank you so much, Biddy!
It really helps your explanation!

i am confused…When i asked “whats going to be happen” btwn us near future was “hanged Man” and far future is ” knight of cups”. Since then no any action at all ! no replies,calls..i lost my hope.i suppose to wait for the knight of cups but there is no any(neither him)
How can i interpret these two together?
December 19th, 2010
Well, it does seem very fitting! The Hanged Man often refers to a period of ‘suspension’ or being stuck. So, with the relationship going on hold, this certainly seems to fit the Hanged Man! The Knight of Cups may be the progression of the relationship at a later date, or even a new suitor, who will be very charming and romantic!
Have fun! Biddy

Hi Biddy,
I did a past, present, future tarot.. and my question was about Love…
I broke up with my bf months ago….
I got these 3 cards, past..the lovers, present…strength, future…the emperor..
Do you think this is a good spread for my future with him?
( i would love to be back together again)
Can you please explain this reading to me?
Thank you sooo much!
B.

Wow, what strong cards! With the Emperor in the future position, I feel that there is a strong possibility of a committed relationship, but the question remains, is it with your ex or a new guy?! You may be drawing on the energy of the Strength card in the present to heal from past disappointments and prepare you for new love. Perhaps even ask the Tarot directly if it is someone new or your ex?

Hi Biddy, I wanted to tell you I absolutely LOVE your blog, it’s really helpful! What you said about the 3 of cups reversed made a lot of sense and I had never read it anywhere else, also your guide to the interpretation of reversed cards was totally useful. I’m so happy you have this blog!
I wanted to ask you something, I was wondering how do you interpret the 4 of cups and the 6 of cups, I particularly find the 6 of cups hard to describe accurately, also, how do you think the Ace of cups would affect these 2 cards in a reading when they’re next to the Ace? Do you think it makes them “better”? Especially the 6 of cups, does it affect it positively and make it stronger/more relevant because of the Ace of cups being next to it? I was reading for my sister, it was a relationship reading, as right now she’s uncertain of how things will work out with her boyfriend, I laid the Court card that represents her first, right next to her the 4 of cups showed up, followed by the Ace of cups, followed by the 6 of cups and next to it, the Court card that describes her boyfriend, facing her, next, the 10 of cups, which I know is a wonderful card for relationships, family and love, but I was wondering about the first 3 cards between them. Also, I’ve had the 10 of cups reversed in similar readings and I was wondering how would you interpret it in that case. What I’ve interpreted it is as the upside meaning of the 10 of cups but with delays and effort before it can actually happen. What do you think?
Thank you so much!

Hi Laura,
Thanks for your positive comments! I am glad to hear you enjoy my blog. I only wish I could post more often!!
I see the Four of Cups as a sign that your sister is holding back for the time being, wanting to reflect inwardly before making a decision about the future of her relationship. She seems reluctant to make a commitmnet just yet, even though her boyfriend may be offering her something more. With the Six of Cups, she may be thinking about a past love that she is still connected to, and with the Ace of Cups, her heart may be drawing her attention away to a new or different relationship. The Ten of Cups reversed can often suggest that there is a mismatch in personal values or what fulfils one partner may not be what fulfils the other. Perhaps, even, one person wants children, marriage, etc. while the other wants a less committed or less ‘settled’ relationship.
Hope this helps! Biddy

Thank you so much, Biddy! Reading for my sister is never an easy task, as she’s so close to me, I find it at times as difficult as reading for myself, in both cases I’m always concerned of being able to be completely objective, I mean, I believe (and know) I am, but still I’m afraid to unconsciously getting “nicer” readings because my feelings are involved; that was the exact case with this reading, I was afraid my desires for her to be happy and for her relationship to work out might had gotten in the way.
Thank you very much again, Biddy!
I’ve already bookmarked your blog in my “favourites”

Hi Biddy,
I had a talk with the ex (for 4 months) and he told me he still loved me but pursued a relationship with a new girl(he wants to marry her and will go saturday to her to propose SHOCK!!!) He told me he doesn’t wanna be alone anymore.. he knows her for a few months. A rebound..
He still has my pics on his phone, wears the watch i gave him and refuses to throw the pics away and some of my clothes. his new girl wants him to throw everything away ofcourse! And he tells me it hurts when we talked…that he loved me…with emotion in his voice…but he wants to move on, he doesn’t wanna be alone anymore! He knows i want to reconcile..
Is this him or not? based on my cards..he is the emperor def sturdy type of man.
Sorry for the long story!
My new tarot today is present – the emperor reversed…for future- the moon
(i closed the window accidently i can’t remember the past card) i think it was the hanged man reversed but i’m not sure

Hi Biddy,
Funny how I’d read this before but upon re-reading just now found it has helped me with my interpretation of the Emperor, which confused me a bit when he came up in a small spread that I did re. a potential love interest. I felt that it was a very positive reading: First 3 cards down were King & Queen of Swords which I feel represents the pair of us both being quite intelligent and having similar ways of thinking, and 10 Pentacles – we are both seeking a stable relationship, marriage and family (however we also know one another through close friends/family so this card could represent that connection). Then because this all seemed to be on an intellectual level rather than loved-up cards, I drew 2 more to ask whether we would be sexually compatible… and got the Emporer and High Priestess. I’m using the Mythic tarot so was very drawn to the mirrored images of the King/Queen Swords and then laid above them, the Emporer and High Priestess (she holding a pomegranate and he the world). Assuming I am the High Priestess, currently focused on expanding my intuition and being quite passive about the situation. But I was quite confused about how he would be the Emporer as I don’t believe him to be the heavy, authoritative type, nor a father-figure. So am now hoping this is a further indicator of the potential for a long and stable relationship. Would appreciate your thoughts on this interpretation. Thanks
April 30th, 2011
Hi Tracey,
Wow, what a great combination of cards! When it comes to sexuality, the High Priestess is very in tune with her inner sexuality and perhaps sees it as a more spiritual process )as well as a pleasurable process). With the Emperor, you might expect your partner to dominate or take the lead at times. I think this would make for a positive combination because you are both maintaining your personal power but in a way that creates a beautiful balance between male and female.
Hope this helps,
Biddy

There is a potential relationship I could be getting into eventually, but because there is a large distance between us, financial issues, and other factors, it makes it difficult to see whether it can overcome these obstacles. I also have anxiety disorders, so sometimes, even though I love her, I have the impulse to run away and not pursue a relationship with her, but sometimes I am uncertain whether it is my anxiety talking or my intuition. Also, my attraction fades in and out towards her sometimes, so sometimes I doubt whether she is the “one” I should be pursuing things with! Recently, she told me although she loves me very much, it would be best to remain just friends because she feels that she is holding me back from relationships here. However, now I just want her more, and I feel that my feelings are deepening for her now! I don’t know whether I should just let her go or evaluate all the doubts and fears that I have and just delve in to take the risk to she if she is the “one” for me. I drew a card asking if whether we should just stay strictly friends, and I drew the Tower. I asked if I should pursue her as a partner, and I got Temperance. When I asked whether I should just pursue other people, I drew the Hanged Man. What does this mean?
May 1st, 2011
Hi Khristine,
Thanks for sharing your comments and story. I would see the Tower as an important shake-up that is about to occur in your friendship, if you were to stay just friends. While it may be a painful time, the Tower is a very powerful card in that with destruction it brings creation, and thus the relationship may actually evolve to a very different level this way. If you were to pursue her as a partner, the Temperance card suggests that this would need to be done with patience and moderation, maintaining a very balanced perspective on the relationship. It may also be a relationship that evolves over time. The Hanged Man, to me, suggests that it’s best to put this idea on hold for now. There seems to be unfinished business here with your girlfriend that needs your attention first.
Hope this helps,
Biddy

Wow, thanks Biddy!
I think I may get a reading about this sometime later… when I have money haha!
I asked if I could pursue her if I work on the causes of my doubts and try to release my fears, then I got Death. Funny, isn’t it? Trouble is, I don’t know if that means to move on from her, if that reflects the elimination of doubts and fears to move forward with her! What do you think? Then, I asked how I could go about with the process of confronting my fears and doubts, and the Temperance card came up again. Apparently, there is a pattern occurring: I guess I need to be patient, more with myself!
May 2nd, 2011
Death is a great card too – lots of personal transformation and leaving behind old patterns of behaviour. Hehe, Temperance again… maybe it’s also a sign to pop the cards down for a little while too
I know it can be tempting to use the Tarot cards for every question that’s on our minds, but sometimes we also need to give it some breathing space. You may have all the information you need right now, so perhaps come back to it in a couple of weeks or when things change.
May 2nd, 2011
Hehehe, how true! it’s very tempting to keep using the cards over and over again for the same problem if you don’t stop yourself!
Thank you very much, by the way!
August 10th, 2011
Hi, there is a classmate that I like alot, and she knows I like her. I used the the Three card spread to see if I will be in to a long term sexual and emotional relationship with her(I did not want the cards to get confused cause I wanted more then a friendship relationship) and I drew a Ten of Pentacles, a reversed page of Pentacles and a Hierophant.
I understand what Hierophant means but I dont understand how the first two cards relate to the outcome. I know that the last card relates to long term relationships which is great, but I heard that I always have to look at the surrounding cards to see the real meaning of the spread. So I am a little confuse what the cards I drew are trying to tell me. Can u help me clear up my confusion?
Thank you
August 10th, 2011
Hi David,
My initial thought was that she is already in a committed relationship (Hierophant and 10P) which is going to make it difficult to manifest the relationship with you (Page of Pentacles reversed). Is this a possibility?
Biddy
September 25th, 2011
i done a reading for myself and the first four cards where the
page of pentacles, the empress, 7 of wands and the lovers. I know the empress and the lovers cards dominate the reading and was wondering what the meaning may be, as it was about a relationship i am in and i dont know what way it will go so i done a reading to find out but readining for ones self isnt easy????? please help??????
September 25th, 2011
It’s interesting to see the 7 of wands as this often indicates competition. It may be possible that you will have to compete against another woman in order to win over this person’s affection. Nonetheless, the Page of Pentacles suggests that you know what to do and how to manifest your goals.
October 19th, 2011
Hey biddy! I did a ” what will happen between us” and I got the emperor, strength, and two of cups. For our outcome I got ” four of wands with the six of pentacles” I just looked and saw that there are some of these cards in there. I’m confused about the six of pentacles…
October 20th, 2011
Hi Rachel,
The Six of Pentacles is usually about giving and taking, and an equal balance between the two. You may both have something to offer each other that creates a synergistic relationship. Also, there’s a financial element here so perhaps one of you can help the other financially.
Hope this helps! Brigit
December 1st, 2011
Hi Brigit,
I love your blog and your advices! Well I have something to seek your advice, I was doing a love spread for my bf’s perception of our relationship. I got Ace of Cups as his inner feeling card, then I got Magician as my own card, also I got Ten of Swords for the near future and outcome I got Four of Cups or something like that. You mentioned a break-up is near if Ten of Swords appear in a Love reading but yet he has Ace of Cups as well. So, I am absolutely confused as the outcome seems to be saying he is not gonna work harder for the relationship. Yet he claimed that he is trying his best and will prove me wrong.
Can you please advise me, sorry for my messy cards explanation. Thank you!
December 8th, 2011
Hi Brigit,
Just wondering if you saw my post?
December 9th, 2011
If I ask if a relationship (which is a mess right now, by the way) is meant to be, and I drew the Empress, is that good?
December 10th, 2011
Hi Kara. With the Empress, at least you’ll be communicating more with each other. Be compassionate towards one another and treat each other with love and respect. You need to come from a place of support, love and nurture to get the relationship back on track. Brigit
December 10th, 2011
Hi Ayu,
Hmm, the Ten of Swords isn’t such a great card, is it? And it does seem out of place with two positive cards like the Ace of Cups and the Magician. It may be that something outside of your control gets in the way and changes your perspective on the relationship. My advice is to enjoy the happiness you have right now and be present with the good feelings in the relationship. Brigit

Hi Brigit,
Thanks for your words, appreciate it.
Love your blog
! Take care for now!

Hi Biddy
I asked first question: Is he interested in me? I drew page of cup. So I asked another question: Will he approach me? I drew page of cup again. Quite funny. I did shuffle and spread out the cards. Based on my feeling i chose the card. In return both cards are page of cup. Can you assist to interpret this for me?
Thanks!

Hi Jenny. I would say, expect a welcome surprise or invitation soon from this guy! Sounds very promising!
